Wood carving has been a passion of mine for about five years and it never gets old. Using only wood found or reclaimed gives it that extra dimension of interest as I work around flaws and character to give depth to each finished piece.

Live edge carving

I am currently using live-edge chestnut firewood and also ancient wooden timbers pulled from the shed roof when we replaced it.

The live edge chestnut gives me a 3D surface to carve, allowing for greater depth in the finished piece and for it to be free standing. And for the first time I have added a color effect, using water based paints overlaid with mineral oil.

The effect is rather pleasing, if I do say so myself.

Black forest inspired carvings

I made a Black Forest inspired bear's head for a friend, but sadly I only have pictures of it before it was stained and detailed. Yet even in the raw wood the character of the piece stands out.

When we redid the roof of our thousand year old shed (we have dug Roman pottery pieces from the floor so it could even be very much older than that!) we had to remove a huge chestnut beam. That wood has been set aside for carving into a few big pieces of art as it’s always fun to go large every now and then.

Messages from the wood

Inspirational sayings and slogans kept in view help inspire people. Having them carved into reclaimed wood adds that little bit extra.
