Whole Oak Galls - 50 g
Oak Galls - 50 g - whole galls
Used for thousands of years for tanning, ink making, magic, you name it, this material has been used by humans for a very long time indeed.
50 g of whole unprocessed galls, between 15 to 18 galls in each bag.
We harvest across the year and keep each picking for a full year, in a well ventilated, dark cool space - under the house where the sheep used to live in ancient times - just in case a late/early hatching wasp winds up in the bag.
Being careful we seldom manage to pick a gall that doesn’t have a clear exit hole, and not every gall hatches a live wasp, but we do NOT want to kill any wasp, hence keeping the galls in a place any emergent wasps can easily return to the oak trees from.
The area we live in (Northern Portuguese mountains) consists of ancient farmland, tiny terraced fields created during the bronze age and no one up here uses any chemicals on their fields or woodlands. It is as unspoiled as it is possible to get in the modern world, so although they are not certified organic, they are as pure as one can find.
The second to last picture shows our current range of all natural ancient-crafts materials, soot, onion skins, and oak galls, the final is a photo bomb of our cat who thinks gall picking walks are the best fun anywhere!
We will be harvesting the Common Madder soon but it has to dry all the way before we can ship it so won’t be ready until Spring at the earliest.
