The Store

PLEASE be advised, all items are plus shipping instead of free shipping because there is no such thing as free shipping, the shipping price is simply added into the item price and to me, that is just dishonest! We can ship pretty much anywhere in the world but, because Portugal is a bit different when it comes to shipping costs, I'll have to package the item and take it into the post office to get the actual price of shipping. It might take a few days to get the total cost of your item but please be patient, I will get back to you with the full price as soon as possible.

Fidgets

10€

Made from chestnut planks taken from the storage loft above the open hearth of our house, the wood is between one to two hundred years old, and quite possibly older. They combine the character of age - including soot blackening from countless fires through the years - with the satiny smoothness of highly polished wood to give comfort and reassurance when held in the hand.

Currently in stock are circle based, 4.5 cm fidgets, carved in various designs with color added into the grooves of the carving to prevent it wearing off with use.

Different colors can be requested, simply drop me a line.

Petal Fidget

10€

Solid eucalyptus wood, well over a hundred years old, was used to make this pocket fidget.  Deeply carved petals of a cherry blossom keep busy fingers happy and the feel of old wood is soothing as well.

I left as much of the soot blackening as possible, the wood was reclaimed from our rebuild, and has hundreds of years of open hearth fires embedded into its surface.

Can also be used as a fan pull

Smooth Fidget

10€

Solid eucalyptus wood, well over a hundred years old, is what I used to create this pocket fidget.  Its smoothe sattiny feel warms quickly in the hand and the smell is the calming spicyness of the wood itself.

Can also be used as a fan pull.

Blanks

20€ for 3

Three wooden fidget blanks. Very old Eucalyptus wood, reclaimed from our rebuild, the smell and feel of the wood is very special. Blanks can be used for any number of things, including pocket fidgets, fan pulls, tokens in games and D & D, and or anything your amazing brain can come up with.

Marble Oak Gall

10€ for 20

This is the best one for making ink. It's not native to the U.K., it was introduced from the Middle East in the nineteenth century, although it was well known in this country in the medieval period. It would have been traded, along with Aleppo galls, throughout the Mediterranean. The marble oak gall wasp (Andricus kollari), like most gall wasps, has a really strange lifecycle. An asexual female (pictured below, right) hatches from the round marble gall on an English oak tree in late summer. It flies off to find a Turkey oak tree, where it will lay its eggs on the buds. These eggs hatch sexual wasps, both male and female, in the spring, and they mate. When the female is ready to lay her fertilised eggs, she finds an English oak and lays an individual egg on the branch. When the larva hatches, it produces a chemical that induces the oak to grow a shell around the area, and thereby encasing the gall grub in a safe, woody nest. When the gall has grown to adulthood, the asexual female chews its way out, leaving behind a tell-tale escape hole.
And while our oak galls have been harvested in Portugal, the lifecycle remains, as far as I know, the same.

We not only harvest the galls from an area of old growth farming, rich in insect life and very low in environmental toxins, we also keep the galls in a sheltered safe place for a year, just in case any late wasps hatch.

It might seem a bit odd but the data on when to safely collect is too hazy for my liking, and our ever changing climate is making what data there is even more inacurate so, just to be safe, we set them aside for a nice long time, just to be sure the lovely ladies have the best chance to escape the gall.

Not all wasps manage it, so occasionally there will be a pristine gall but mostly what we find have clearly defined holes in them.

We sell whole galls, although by the tie the post is done with them they will probably be rather cracked and broken.

We'll send you 20 galls in a mix of sizes, mostly on the large end of the size spectrum.
